James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's actively scripting his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's clearly busy!
While Gunn remains tight-lipped about his next project – likely until after Superman's July release – we've considered which franchises best align with his unique style and the DCU's priorities under Gunn and Peter Safran. Here are some potential candidates for his next DC film:

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Despite Batman's cinematic prevalence, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates significant buzz. This reboot introduces the DCU's Caped Crusader, focusing on the Bat-family, including Damian Wayne. However, the film's progress seems slow, with director Andy Muschietti's involvement uncertain. The challenge of integrating this Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's iteration adds complexity. Gunn's expertise in father-son dynamics (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) could make him an ideal choice should Muschietti depart.
The Flash
The Flash is crucial to the DCU, a Justice League cornerstone and multiverse figure. However, past live-action adaptations have been uneven. Ezra Miller's portrayal and the underperforming film necessitate a fresh approach, avoiding overused narratives like Flashpoint. Gunn's knack for dynamic action and character development could revitalize the Flash franchise.
The Authority
Gunn acknowledged the challenges of adapting The Authority, citing its similarity to The Boys and other projects. He described it as currently on the back burner. Nevertheless, its importance to the expanding DCU is undeniable, particularly in showcasing the contrast between optimistic heroes and cynical anti-heroes. Gunn's experience with unconventional heroes makes him a suitable director.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
The planned Waller series has faced setbacks, likely due to Gunn's numerous commitments. As his schedule clears, a Waller-focused film might become a priority. Given ARGUS's central role in the DCU (seen in Superman, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos), this film could solidify the universe's foundation.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman's underperformance highlighted audience fatigue with overly dark tones. A Gunn-directed film could offer a more optimistic portrayal of the iconic duo, showcasing their friendship and collaborative efforts. This could be a significant hit for the burgeoning DCU.
Titans
The Teen Titans boast a massive fanbase and rich comic history. While the Max series had its flaws, it demonstrated the characters' live-action potential. Gunn's success with the Guardians of the Galaxy suggests he could effectively portray the Titans' familial dynamic.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase emphasizes the supernatural. A Justice League Dark film featuring magical heroes like Zatanna, Etrigan, and Swamp Thing could expand the universe's scope. Gunn's storytelling style aligns perfectly with this team's inherent dysfunction.
