A Retro Gaming Retrospective: Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Titles on the Nintendo Switch
This article takes a unique look at the surprisingly limited selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, excluding those found within the Nintendo Switch Online app. We've compiled a curated list of ten exceptional games – four from the GBA and six from the DS – showcasing the best of what's available outside the subscription service. No particular ranking is implied.
Game Boy Advance Gems
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is Steel Empire, a solid shoot 'em up. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration offers a compelling alternative, providing an interesting comparison and a potentially more streamlined experience. It's an enjoyable title even for those who aren't typically drawn to the genre.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
The Mega Man X series might have faltered on home consoles, but the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent series of side-scrolling action games, though its initial entry shows some minor imperfections in its presentation. These rough edges are refined in later installments, but this is undoubtedly the best place to start your Mega Man Zero journey.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is a unique RPG boasting a compelling blend of action and strategy within its innovative battle system. The concept of a virtual world residing within electronic devices is cleverly executed, and the game fully commits to this premise. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection features multiple worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it often surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding a rewarding experience. The unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance its appeal, making it a top-tier third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS Standouts
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Initially a cult classic with limited reach, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, ensuring her continued presence across console generations. Its origins are somewhat hazy, stemming from an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future updated list.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney is a renowned adventure game series. It expertly blends investigation segments with dramatic courtroom sequences, all infused with humorous elements and engaging narratives. The first game is particularly impressive, though later installments also hold significant merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay mechanics. As a ghost, you must utilize your abilities to save individuals while uncovering the truth behind your own demise. This captivating game is highly recommended.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, The World Ends With You is ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, and it's a title well worth playing regardless of the platform.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worth playing, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the switch from touch controls to standard button controls. However, all three DS titles in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem, but this adaptation to the Switch is a successful attempt. Each game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, offers a compelling, albeit occasionally challenging, experience.
This list represents a personal selection, and we encourage you to share your favorite Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games available on the Switch in the comments below!
