Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

Larian Studios' highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has unleashed a tidal wave of community-created mods. The response has been phenomenal, with an astonishing number of downloads shortly after its September 5th release.

Larian CEO Swen Vincke proudly announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours. This was further confirmed and expanded upon by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported the install count exceeding three million and still climbing. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated.

Patch 7's success is largely attributed to the inclusion of Larian's own Mod Manager, a user-friendly in-game tool for browsing, installing, and managing mods. The separate Steam app provides modders with access to Larian's Osiris scripting language, allowing for custom stories, script loading, and basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.

A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" has even pushed the boundaries further, unlocking a full level editor and reactivating previously restricted features in Larian's editor. This development highlights the community's enthusiasm and Larian's measured approach to providing modding tools. While acknowledging the immense creative potential of open access, Larian has previously expressed its focus on game development rather than tool creation.

Looking ahead, Larian plans to introduce cross-platform modding, allowing players on PC and consoles to share and enjoy community creations. Vincke noted the complexity of this undertaking, particularly for console implementation due to submission processes. The PC version will take priority, with console support following later.

Beyond the modding frenzy, Patch 7 also boasts significant improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue, and numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
