Daredevil: Born Again's New Trailer Hints at an Unlikely Alliance

A new trailer for Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4th on Disney+, reveals a surprising development: Daredevil and Kingpin, longtime adversaries, appear to be collaborating. This collaboration is likely fueled by a common enemy, the newly introduced villain, Muse, a serial killer with artistic inclinations and superhuman abilities.

Who is Muse?

Muse, a relatively recent addition to Daredevil's rogue's gallery, debuted in 2016's Daredevil #11. Created by Charles Soule and Ron Garney, and confirmed by Soule himself to be featured in the D23 footage, Muse is a chilling antagonist. He views murder as a high art form, creating gruesome displays using his victims. His unique ability to disrupt Daredevil's radar sense adds another layer of danger to his already formidable superhuman strength and speed.

Muse's initial conflict with Daredevil and Blindspot escalates when he blinds Blindspot. After his capture, he self-mutilates to prevent further artistic creations. However, he escapes, renewing his bloody campaign and targeting vigilantes, creating twisted tributes to figures like the Punisher. This ultimately leads to a final confrontation with Blindspot, resulting in Muse's suicide. While deceased in the comics, his return in the MCU is highly anticipated.

Muse in Daredevil: Born Again

The D23 and subsequent trailers confirm Muse's presence in Daredevil: Born Again, sporting a costume strikingly similar to his comic book counterpart – a white mask and bodysuit with red "tears." His appearance in multiple scenes, including a confrontation with Daredevil, suggests a significant role.

The series, while bearing the name of a classic Frank Miller storyline, takes a different path. While the original Born Again centered on Fisk's discovery of Daredevil's identity, the show, with Fisk already aware of Daredevil's secret, focuses on a new threat. This threat necessitates an alliance between Daredevil and Fisk, as seen in a diner scene where Matt threatens Fisk, prompting Fisk's cryptic response about Murdock's "darker half."

The Common Enemy

Could Muse be the catalyst for this unlikely alliance? The series seems to draw inspiration from more recent Daredevil comics, particularly the works of Soule and Chip Zdarsky. With Fisk elected mayor and campaigning against vigilantism, Muse's actions, mirroring his comic book counterpart, directly oppose Fisk's agenda. Muse's glorification of vigilantes like the Punisher creates a mutual enemy for both Daredevil and Fisk. Daredevil seeks to stop a killer, while Fisk aims to eliminate a threat to his authority. This shared objective forces an uneasy alliance, even if it means collaborating with someone actively working to dismantle Daredevil's existence.

The Wider Implications

Daredevil: Born Again will also feature other vigilantes, including the Punisher and White Tiger, likely caught in the crossfire of Fisk's anti-vigilante campaign. Muse's actions, glorifying these vigilantes, further escalate the conflict.

While the Daredevil/Fisk rivalry remains central, Muse emerges as the immediate threat. His powers and ruthlessness make him a formidable opponent, necessitating Daredevil's alliance with the very man he opposes.
