GTA 5 Liberty City Mod Shut Down

Liberty City GTA 5 Mod Shut Down Following Contact with Rockstar Games

A highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 mod recreating Liberty City has been discontinued. The news follows the mod's popularity in 2024. While some developers embrace modding, others, like Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive, are known for aggressive responses. Despite this, the modding team, World Travel, remains dedicated to GTA modding.

World Travel announced the cessation of the "Liberty City Preservation Project" on their Discord server. They cited "unexpected attention" and subsequent discussions with Rockstar Games as the reason for the shutdown. While the specifics remain undisclosed, the implication is that legal pressure influenced the decision.

This isn't an isolated incident; Take-Two's history of aggressive DMCA takedowns against mods is well-documented. Given the volunteer nature of modding and the lack of legal resources for most modders, such contact often results in project termination.

The community's reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, with many criticizing Rockstar and Take-Two for their stance on modding. This is particularly frustrating given the absence of Liberty City in the upcoming GTA 6, which currently features Vice City. While Take-Two might argue the mod could affect GTA 4 sales, many disagree; playing the mod still requires owning GTA 5.

The Liberty City Preservation Project is no longer available. While World Travel expresses continued passion for GTA modding, Take-Two's approach to modding remains a significant concern for the modding community.
