This concludes my retrospective series on retro game eShop selections. The supply of retro consoles with diverse game libraries is dwindling, but I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game collection, many of which continue to see re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a standout 2.5D platformer, deserves more recognition than it received. Players control a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Its vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, memorable bosses, and surprisingly poignant narrative make it a gem. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both titles are essential as a complete package.
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and a key driver of the PlayStation's triumph. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII remains a classic, showcasing its enduring appeal despite its dated polygon graphics.
Metal Gear Solid catapulted a dormant franchise into the mainstream. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, blending thrilling gameplay with a more straightforward narrative reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its fun factor is undeniable, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
Taito's G-Darius successfully transitioned the classic shoot 'em up series to 3D. While the polygon graphics haven't aged perfectly, their charm is undeniable. The vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs make for a compelling shooter experience.
While Chrono Cross faced the nearly impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits. Beyond its comparisons to its predecessor, it's a visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters and one of the best video game soundtracks ever created.
While personal bias clouds my judgment, Mega Man X4 stands out among its Mega Man X series counterparts due to its superior cohesion. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience it firsthand and form your own opinion.
Tomba! is a unique blend of platformer and adventure game. Created by the mind behind Ghosts 'n Goblins, it initially appears lighthearted but offers a surprising level of challenge.
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing the spirit of Lunar, Grandia stands out with its bright and cheerful adventure, complemented by a satisfying combat system.
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is a classic. While the quality varied across the five games, the original's focus on tomb raiding makes it a strong entry point. This collection allows players to experience the first three installments.
A unique Japanese release, moon deconstructs the typical RPG formula. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and thought-provoking narrative make it a memorable experience.
This concludes my list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments below! Thank you for reading.
