Helldivers 2 Movie: Developers Shouldn't Control Adaptation

by Adam Mar 14,2025

Sony’s CES 2025 presentation unveiled several surprising film and television adaptations, including a confirmed movie based on the popular PlayStation game, Helldivers 2.

This collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures promises a cinematic experience based on Arrowhead Game Studios' title. While specifics remain scarce, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed the project during the CES keynote. He stated, "Looking ahead, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game, Helldivers 2."

Helldivers 2, heavily inspired by Starship Troopers, plunges players into a futuristic conflict where soldiers defend a fascist Super Earth regime against robotic Automatons and insectoid Terminids, all while upholding the principles of "Managed Democracy."

The announcement has sparked numerous fan questions, many of which remain unanswered. However, Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt addressed concerns regarding the developer's involvement, confirming some level of input while acknowledging their lack of filmmaking expertise. Pilestedt stated, “I've been dodging this question. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say.”

The choice of Helldivers 2 for adaptation, given the existence of Starship Troopers, is intriguing. The project appears to be in its early stages, suggesting further details may be some time in coming.

Remarkably, Helldivers 2 achieved phenomenal success, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, surpassing 12 million copies sold within 12 weeks. Its popularity continues to surge following the recent release of the highly anticipated Illuminate update, introducing a third playable faction.

Sony's CES 2025 showcase also featured announcements of a Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptation from Guerrilla Games and an anime adaptation of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima. This flurry of adaptations underscores Sony's commitment to expanding its video game properties into other media, complementing the upcoming April release of Season 2 of HBO's successful The Last of Us series.
