Sony Wants to Buy Kadokawa and Their Employees Are Thrilled

Sony's proposed acquisition of Kadokawa has sparked excitement among Kadokawa employees, despite potential concerns about losing autonomy. This article explores the reasons behind their optimism and analyzes the implications of this significant deal.

A Strategic Move for Sony, but Uncertain for Kadokawa?

While Sony's intent to acquire the Japanese publishing giant Kadokawa is official, negotiations are ongoing. Analyst Takahiro Suzuki, as reported in Weekly Bunshun, suggests the acquisition benefits Sony more than Kadokawa. Sony's shift towards entertainment necessitates a stronger IP portfolio, a weakness Kadokawa readily addresses with its extensive library of popular anime (like Oshi no Ko and Dungeon Meshi), manga, and games including the critically acclaimed Elden Ring.

However, this acquisition could compromise Kadokawa's independence and lead to stricter management. As Automaton West notes, the potential loss of operational freedom is a significant factor. The scrutiny applied to projects not directly contributing to IP development could stifle creative endeavors.

Employee Optimism Amidst Leadership Dissatisfaction

Interestingly, Weekly Bunshun reports a largely positive employee response to the potential Sony acquisition. Many interviewed expressed approval, viewing Sony as a preferable alternative to the current leadership.

This positive sentiment stems from widespread dissatisfaction with the current Natsuno administration, particularly its handling of a June cyberattack by the BlackSuit hacking group. The breach compromised over 1.5 terabytes of data, including sensitive employee information. The perceived inadequate response from President Takeshi Natsuno has fueled employee discontent, leading many to believe a change in leadership under Sony's ownership is desirable. The hope is that Sony would replace the current President.
