The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

Naughty Dog’s recent comments suggest the Last of Us video game series might be over. Let's delve into the future of the franchise and Naughty Dog's current projects.

The Last of Us: No More Sequels?

Naughty Dog's Perspective

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

According to Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, in a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety, don't expect another Last of Us sequel. His statement, "I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it," casts significant doubt on the future of the game series. This comes as Naughty Dog shifts focus towards expanding the Last of Us TV series.

Druckmann previously expressed his reservations about focusing on sequels during a DICE Summit 2025 interview with IGN. He stated he prefers to approach each game as a standalone project, rather than planning multiple entries from the outset. This approach suggests that any future Last of Us ideas are unlikely. The Last of Us Part II provided a somewhat conclusive narrative, further supporting this conclusion. However, fans can still anticipate the release of The Last of Us season 2 on April 13, 2025.

A New IP on the Horizon

While the future of the Last of Us game series remains uncertain, Naughty Dog is actively developing a new intellectual property (IP). Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, announced at The Game Awards 2024, is a sci-fi title slated for PlayStation 5. The game, in development since 2020, is described as Naughty Dog's most ambitious and creative project yet. Further details are eagerly awaited.

The Cancellation of The Last of Us Online

The cancellation of The Last of Us Online paved the way for Intergalactic. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida, in a February 19, 2025 interview with the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, revealed that Bungie's advice on the complexities of maintaining live-service games led Naughty Dog to recognize the challenges of simultaneously developing The Last of Us Online and Intergalactic. The decision to focus on the latter was ultimately made.

Druckmann's comments, coupled with the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, strongly suggest Naughty Dog's current focus is elsewhere. However, fans can look forward to the upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on April 3, 2025.
