Nvidia Warns of RTX 5090/5080 Shortages

by Stella Mar 12,2025

The Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to launch on January 30th, but reports from retailers and manufacturers suggest significant shortages are likely. Consumers are already lining up outside stores in anticipation, highlighting the intense demand for these high-end GPUs, despite their hefty price tags of $1,999 and $999 respectively.

Manufacturer MSI, as reported by WCCFTech, attributes the initial scarcity to the Lunar New Year, impacting the first wave of shipments. Stock is expected to improve throughout February. This shortage is echoed by retailers. Overclockers UK reports receiving only a handful of RTX 5090 units, and limited RTX 5080 stock. U.S. retailer PowerGPU predicts extremely limited availability for the RTX 5090.

In response to growing concerns, Nvidia representative Tim@Nvidia issued a statement on the company's forum acknowledging the anticipated high demand and the possibility of stock-outs. They assure consumers that Nvidia and its partners are actively working to increase retail stock.

Despite Nvidia's statement, the potential for shortages has already attracted scalpers. Pre-sale listings on eBay show inflated prices, with one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for a staggering $5,750—a 187% markup.

Adding to Nvidia's challenges, the company's share price dropped significantly following the announcement of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, raising concerns about future datacenter GPU sales. This may further impact the allocation of resources and potentially exacerbate the consumer GPU shortage.
