Ratatan, the highly anticipated spiritual successor to Patapon, has unveiled its official gameplay trailer, showcasing the rhythm-based combat and cooperative action that have captivated fans of the original series. This article delves into the new trailer and the upcoming closed beta.

Gameplay Trailer Highlights Boss Battles and 4-Player Co-op

The trailer offers a thrilling glimpse into Ratatan's gameplay, featuring a dynamic battle against a colossal boss crab. The footage highlights the game's unique blend of rhythm-based mechanics and side-scrolling action, a hallmark of the Patapon series. A key feature showcased is the online cooperative mode, allowing up to four players to engage in massive, 100-character battles.

Developed by Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani and featuring music by the original Patapon composer Kemmei Adachi, Ratatan has already exceeded expectations, achieving its console launch stretch goal on Kickstarter in 2023.

Closed Beta Commences February 27, 2025

Ratatan Gameplay Trailer Reveals 4 Person Online Co-Op

Ratatan's closed beta test is scheduled to begin on February 27, 2025, as announced via the game's Kickstarter page. Producer Kazuto Sakajiri shared exciting updates, including over 100,000 Steam wishlists and positive reception to the original soundtrack demo. While the game won't be featured in the upcoming Steam Next Fest, the team is prioritizing the closed beta and preparing an enhanced demo for the June Steam Next Fest.

The closed beta will initially feature the first stage, with stages two and three added during the month-long testing period. Distribution details for beta keys will be announced on the official Discord and X (formerly Twitter) channels.

Ratatan is slated for release in 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. A precise release date remains unannounced.
