ININ Games has acquired the publishing rights for Shenmue III, opening the possibility of the game being released on additional platforms. Keep reading to learn more about this development and its potential impact on the future of the Shenmue series.
In a significant development for fans of the beloved Shenmue series, Inin Games has officially acquired the publishing rights to Shenmue III. The announcement hints at exciting updates for the title, which originally debuted as a PlayStation exclusive in 2019. This move reignites discussions among fans, particularly Xbox users, who have long hoped for a port to their platform. While details remain scarce, the acquisition positions Inin Games to potentially expand the game’s reach and revive interest in the franchise.
The game is currently available on PS4 and PC in both digital and physical formats. However, ININ Games, known for releasing arcade classics on multiple platforms, may offer Shenmue III the same treatment, making it accessible to an even larger audience. The acquisition of the game's publishing rights by ININ Games has potentially opened the door to bringing Shenmue III to other platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch and Xbox.
Ys Net launched a Kickstarter campaign back in July 2015. The game went beyond its goal of $2 million and received $6.3 million from backers, showing that interest in the series never died down. After its campaign, the game was released to PS4 and PC platforms. However, with ININ Games’ publishing rights acquisition, Shenmue III might be available to other platforms in the future as well.
Shenmue III continues the story of Ryo and Shenhua as they set off on a new journey in the hopes of uncovering the person behind his father’s death. This iconic duo will travel deep into the enemy territory to track down the Chi You Men cartel and face Lan Di, the overarching protagonist, once again. Built in Unreal Engine 4, the game features a blend of the classic look and modern graphics, making Ryo’s world as immersive and vibrant as ever.
Currently, Shenmue III enjoys a Mostly Positive rating of 76% on Steam. Though the majority of players welcomed the game as the latest addition to the Shenmue series, some are not happy with its current version. One user mentioned that it can only be played using a controller, while another mentioned that the Steam keys were given late. Despite these issues, many fans are still hoping for an Xbox and Nintendo Switch port.
The recent acquisition might also lead to the release of the Shenmue trilogy under ININ Games' banner. Known for reviving arcade classics on modern platforms, the publisher is currently collaborating with HAMSTER Corporation to release Taito games from the 80s and 90s, such as the Rastan Saga series and Runark, in a physical and digital bundle set for release on December 10.
Shenmue I and II were released in August 2018 and are available for purchase on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Although there is no official information regarding the possibility of a Shenmue trilogy, the recent acquisition of Shenmue III’s publishing rights could make this a reality under ININ Games' banner.
