Switch Mouse? Not Such a Far-Fetched Idea Anymore

by Bella Feb 25,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to earlier rumors suggesting Joy-Con functionality as a mouse.

PlayThe reveal trailer showcased detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These then moved across the surface, mimicking mouse-like cursor control. A slider pad is even visible on one connector, further supporting this theory.

Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice. While Nintendo hasn't confirmed this, the possibilities are exciting. Fans envision applications in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard-friendly games like Civilization, but also anticipate innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party titles. The full potential remains unknown.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding potential mouse support and a new Joy-Con button, several details about the Switch 2 are confirmed. It's officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025, with a new Mario Kart title in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is assured, and further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
