Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics ($49.99)

For 90s fans of Marvel, Capcom, and fighting games, Capcom's Marvel-based fighters were a dream. Beginning with the excellent X-Men: Children of the Atom, the series progressively improved, expanding into the wider Marvel Universe with Marvel Super Heroes, culminating in the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom and the spectacular Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics encompasses this era, adding Capcom's Punisher beat 'em up for good measure. A truly impressive collection of classic titles.

This compilation shares similarities with the Capcom Fighting Collection, including features and extras. Unfortunately, this also means a single shared save state across all seven games, a drawback particularly noticeable with the beat 'em up. However, the collection offers extensive customization options (visual filters, gameplay adjustments), bonus content (art, music player), and rollback online multiplayer. The inclusion of NAOMI hardware emulation enhances the experience, making Marvel vs. Capcom 2 particularly impressive.

While not a criticism, the absence of home console versions is notable. The PlayStation EX versions of the tag-team games offer unique elements, and the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 boasts additional content. The omission of Capcom's Super NES Marvel titles is also slightly disappointing. However, the "Arcade Classics" designation is accurately applied here.

Marvel and fighting game enthusiasts will appreciate this exceptional collection. The games are expertly presented, complemented by a range of extras and options. The single shared save state is a significant downside, but otherwise, this is a near-perfect compilation. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a must-have for Switch owners.

Yars Rising ($29.99)

Initial skepticism regarding this Metroidvania-style Yars game was understandable. The concept of a young hacker, code-named Yar, in a Yars' Revenge universe felt incongruous. However, WayForward delivers a solid title with appealing visuals, sound, and gameplay. Boss battles, while lengthy, don't detract significantly.

WayForward successfully integrates elements of the original Yars' Revenge, incorporating similar gameplay sequences and abilities within the expanded lore. The connection to the original feels somewhat strained, but it's a commendable attempt to bridge the gap between a classic single-screen shooter and a modern Metroidvania. The game might struggle to fully satisfy both audiences, but it's undeniably enjoyable.

Despite conceptual questions, Yars Rising is a fun Metroidvania experience. While not genre-defining, it provides a satisfying weekend gaming experience. Future installments could potentially solidify the connection between the original and this new iteration.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland ($24.99)

Lacking strong personal nostalgia for Rugrats, expectations for Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland were moderate. The game's crisp visuals and customizable controls were immediately appealing. The inclusion of Reptar coins, puzzles, and enemies established a solid platformer foundation.

The game's unique feature is its clear inspiration from Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). Each character possesses distinct jump heights and abilities, mirroring the original game's diverse gameplay mechanics. Enemies can be picked up and thrown, and blocks can be manipulated to solve puzzles. The game also incorporates elements of other platformers.

The game features selectable visual styles and soundtracks, offering both modern and 8-bit options. The boss battles are engaging, and multiplayer is supported. The only significant drawbacks are its brevity and simplicity. The lack of voice acting in cutscenes is also a minor disappointment.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland surpasses expectations. It's a well-executed platformer reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2, with added features and a fitting implementation of the Rugrats license. While short, it's a worthwhile experience for platformer and Rugrats fans.
