WWE 2K25 Hands-On Preview

by Scarlett Feb 26,2025

WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, weren't available for preview, leaving the focus on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.

Showcase Mode: A Step Forward

This year's Showcase centers on The Bloodline, spanning generations of Anoa'i wrestlers. It features three match types: recreating history, creating history, and – most excitingly – altering history. While offering unique perspectives for WWE fans, and improvement over previous iterations, the Showcase still has minor flaws.

Addressing Past Criticisms:

The over-reliance on lengthy real-life footage, a previous criticism, is significantly reduced. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more engaging experience. While complete control isn't always maintained (as seen in the Nia Jax match conclusion), this is a marked improvement. The checklist system, another point of contention, remains but is refined with optional timed objectives and rewards, eliminating the previous punitive system. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a fresh perspective on iconic moments.

Gameplay Enhancements:

Core gameplay remains largely unchanged, retaining the successful formula of WWE 2K24. However, welcome additions include the return of chain wrestling, adding strategic depth to the beginning of matches. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events. Weapon throwing returns with expanded environments and a wider weapon selection, including the surprising addition of Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle. Most notably, intergender matches are finally available, vastly expanding matchup possibilities with the game's 300+ wrestler roster.

A New Match Type:

The preview included a glimpse at the "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting. Further details will be revealed in upcoming IGN First content.

Overall Impression:

WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation, adding smart refinements rather than revolutionary changes. While the unplayed new modes and features remain unknown quantities, the improvements to the Showcase Mode and gameplay additions suggest another successful iteration of the series.
