The Hang: A Swiss Idiophone
The Hang, a musical instrument categorized as an idiophone, originates from Switzerland. Its unique design features two concaved, nitrided steel half-shells, joined at the rim to form a hollow, distinctive "UFO" shape. The top ("Ding") surface includes a central note and seven or eight surrounding tone fields, all carefully hammered into place. The bottom ("Gu") is a smooth surface with a central hole, producing a tuned note when the rim is struck. It's also known as a handpan.
The Hang's design incorporates principles similar to those of a steelpan, but adapted to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its creation represents years of research into steelpan and other instrument designs.
