Apex Legends 2.0: EA's New Strategy After Battlefield

by Aria Mar 12,2025

EA's recent financial call revealed that while Apex Legends boasts a massive player base of over 200 million, its revenue isn't meeting expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the game's success but highlighted the need for a strategic shift to improve its financial trajectory. He outlined a three-pronged approach: continued support for the existing community through quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content; ongoing development and testing of new content; and a major game update dubbed Apex Legends 2.0.

This Apex Legends 2.0 update, planned for release after the next Battlefield title (before April 2026), aims to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost revenue. Wilson emphasized that this isn't the end of Apex Legends, but rather a significant evolution designed to ensure the game's longevity. He envisions Apex Legends as a long-term franchise, comparable to other successful EA titles, undergoing further major updates in the future.

The planned update is reminiscent of Call of Duty Warzone's 2.0 reboot, though the reception to that remains mixed. While Apex Legends maintains a strong presence on Steam's concurrent player count charts, it's past its peak and trending downward. EA will undoubtedly learn from competitors' experiences in the battle royale market as they strive to expand Apex Legends' player base and financial performance.
