Apple Announces Its Latest Budget Phone, the iPhone 16e

by Hannah Apr 11,2025

On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, marking it as the most affordable option in their latest lineup. This new model replaces the 2022 iPhone SE as the budget-friendly choice, though it steps away from the deep discounts associated with the SE series. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e narrows the price gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e begin on Friday, Feb. 21, with the official launch set for the following week on Friday, Feb. 28.

The iPhone 16e introduces Apple's C1 cellular modem, the company's first in-house modem solution. Apple has a strong track record with its proprietary chips, such as the M1 series in its computers and the A-series in its mobile devices. The modem, often an overlooked component, is crucial for connectivity. Apple's past experience with the "Antennagate" issue on the iPhone 4, which involved antenna design and signal strength problems, should inform their approach to ensuring robust connectivity with the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e.

From the front, the iPhone 16e is nearly indistinguishable from the iPhone 14, featuring the same 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. While this display doesn't match the sharpness or brightness of the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e does include the Action button and a USB-C port, though it lacks the Camera Control feature.

The back of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with a single 48MP camera, reminiscent of the iPhone SE's design. This camera shares many traits with the iPhone 16's main camera but lacks advanced features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera, however, is identical to the iPhone 16's and includes Face ID.

The iPhone 16e's build consists of an aluminum frame, a glass back, and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. Despite Apple's claim in the press release that this Ceramic Shield is "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's important to note that a newer version of Ceramic Shield is touted as being "two times tougher." This raises questions about the durability of the older Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 16e, especially considering the visible wear on the display noted in the iPhone 16 review.

Internally, the iPhone 16e showcases Apple's strategy of product differentiation. While the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models differ in their chips—the Pro models featuring the A18 Pro with enhanced speeds and more GPU cores—the iPhone 16e uses an "A18" chip similar to the iPhone 16 but with a reduced 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. Although this may position the iPhone 16e a step below in performance, it retains the Neural Engine, enabling access to Apple Intelligence features.

The iPhone 16e's $599 price point makes it Apple's most affordable current model, but it lacks the significant discount offered by the 2022 iPhone SE, which launched at $429 with the same chip as the $799 iPhone 13. While the design of the iPhone 16e is more recent than the SE's, it still doesn't match the substantial savings of its predecessor.

The real test for the iPhone 16e will be its performance in the market. With competitive alternatives like the OnePlus 13R available around $600, Apple may find it challenging to attract buyers outside its existing ecosystem. Time will tell how well the iPhone 16e resonates with consumers looking for a cost-effective yet capable smartphone.
