Ubisoft has celebrated yet another milestone for *Assassin's Creed Shadows*, announcing that the game has reached 2 million players since its release on March 20. This impressive figure marks a significant increase from the 1 million players recorded on launch day. Ubisoft proudly stated that this surpasses the launch performances of both *Assassin's Creed Origins* and *Odyssey*, and expressed gratitude to fans with a nod to the game's setting: "Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"

While Ubisoft has not yet released specific sales figures for *Assassin's Creed Shadows*, the game has already claimed the title of top-selling game on Steam. This marks a notable return for Ubisoft to the platform after years of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store for PC launches. At the time of writing, *Assassin's Creed Shadows* boasted 58,894 concurrent players on Steam, securing a spot in the top 30 most-played games on Valve's platform. This peak is anticipated to climb further over the opening weekend.

For context, *Assassin's Creed Origins* reached a peak of 41,551 players on Steam over seven years ago, while *Odyssey* hit 62,069. Given these numbers, it's likely that *Shadows* will soon become the most-played game on Steam this weekend.

In comparison, *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*, BioWare's latest single-player RPG, launched on Steam on October 31, 2024, and achieved a peak of 89,418 players. It's important to note that the total concurrent peak for *Assassin's Creed Shadows* will be significantly higher, as it also launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Microsoft disclose player numbers publicly.

The Complete Assassin's Creed Timeline

The success of Assassin's Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, especially following multiple delays and the commercial disappointment of last year's Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft has faced numerous challenges recently, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The situation became so dire that the Guillemot family, Ubisoft's founders and largest shareholders, are reportedly in discussions with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout that would allow them to retain control.

*Assassin's Creed Shadows* itself has not been immune to controversy, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN confirmed that Ubisoft released a day-one patch for the game, making significant changes likely in response to concerns raised by Japanese politicians regarding in-game depictions of temples and shrines. In a notable political exchange, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada brought up *Assassin's Creed Shadows* during an official government meeting, prompting a response from Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
