To embark on The Tournament quest in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, you'll need to meet Gyoji, a resident of Yamato. After you’ve taken down several members of The Shinbakufu, Gyoji will be waiting just outside your hideout, eager to discuss the tournament. This clandestine fighting arena is situated at the Ominesanji Temple in Southeastern Yamato. To ease your future visits, synchronize at the Ominesanji Overlook viewpoint to the west of the area, which also serves as a fast travel point.

Upon arriving at the Ominesanji Temple, engage with Gyoji once more. He'll brief you on the challenge ahead: four one-on-one duels, followed by a showdown with the ultimate champion. After this briefing, ring the bell to initiate the first fight.

The Tournament is a gauntlet of high-stakes, life-or-death battles. Fortunately, you can pause between fights, allowing you to heal using rations and upgrade your weapons and armor as necessary. To ring the bell for the next bout, take your time to prepare adequately.

To triumph over your opponents, we recommend equipping Yasuke with a long katana and mastering the art of dodging and parrying to exploit their vulnerabilities. Utilize abilities like Power Dash and Payback whenever you have sufficient adrenaline. Understanding each fighter’s weapon can also give you an edge:

  • Lady Masago wields a Naginata.
  • Lord Suguru fights with a Katana.
  • Lord Hokuto uses a Kanabo.
  • Lady O-Sen employs two Poison Katanas and throws ranged items.
  • Lord Unkai uses a Naginata and can heal if you keep your distance too long.

After defeating the last opponent, ascend the hill to speak with Gyoji once more. He’ll express gratitude for his freedom and hint at future tournaments. It’s during this conversation that the "Test Your Might" trophy will unlock.

Best Loadout and Skills for Tournaments in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

For The Tournament, the Long Katana is your weapon of choice. Ensure you equip the highest rarity Long Katana available, upgraded to its maximum potential at your hideout’s blacksmith. Enhance it with engravings that boost Armor Damage or Armor Piercing for an edge in battle.

Your armor choice is crucial, as it not only boosts your health but can also introduce game-changing abilities through engravings. Prior to entering The Tournament, secure the Samurai Daimyo Armor of Legend by defeating The Ox of The Shinbakufu, and the Protector’s Armor from completing a Castle quest. The former engraving amplifies your damage by 75% but caps your health at 25%, while the latter enables you to parry unblockable attacks. Combining these engravings into one armor set can help you dispatch tournament foes in under a minute, provided you parry effectively and frequently.

For skills, focus on investing Mastery points into the Long Katana and Samurai skill trees. Max out Combat Expert to enhance your melee weapon damage and unlock Power Dash and Payback for decisive combat advantages.

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S from March 20th.
