Crysis 4 ‘On Hold’ as Developer Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting Up to 60 Staff

Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting 15% of its Workforce

Game developer Crytek has announced a difficult decision to lay off approximately 60 employees, representing 15% of its 400-person staff. The announcement, made via a tweet and a statement from founder Avni Yerli, cites challenging market conditions as the primary reason.

While the company's successful title, Hunt: Showdown, continues to grow, Crytek stated that maintaining its current operational structure is financially unsustainable. Despite previous cost-cutting measures, including placing Crysis 4 on hold in late 2024 and shifting resources to Hunt: Showdown, layoffs were deemed necessary to ensure the company's long-term viability.

The layoffs impact various teams, including development and shared services. Crytek has committed to providing severance packages and career support to affected employees.

Yerli's full statement emphasizes the difficult nature of the decision and the company's appreciation for its employees' contributions. He reiterated Crytek's commitment to Hunt: Showdown, highlighting its continued growth and importance to the company's future, along with the ongoing development of their CRYENGINE.

The news follows previous reports of a canceled Crysis Next project, a battle royale-inspired title that was ultimately scrapped in favor of Crysis 4. The highly anticipated Crysis 4, announced in January 2022, remains on hold, leaving fans awaiting further updates. The Crysis series, known for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements, last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. Crytek has released remasters of the original games in recent years.
