Funko has issued a statement regarding the temporary shutdown of Itch.io, allegedly caused by its brand protection software, BrandShield. Let's examine Funko's response.
Funko's official X (formerly Twitter) account addressed the situation, emphasizing their respect for the indie gaming community. They confirmed that BrandShield flagged an Itch.io page mimicking a Funko Fusion development website, leading to a takedown request. Crucially, Funko clarified they didn't request a complete Itch.io shutdown and expressed relief at the platform's swift restoration.
Funko stated they're now in direct communication with Itch.io to resolve the matter and appreciate the community's understanding.
However, Itch.io's owner, Leaf, provided a more nuanced account on Hacker News. He revealed the incident stemmed from a "fraud and phishing report," not just a simple takedown request. This report triggered automated actions by the registrar, resulting in the domain's complete takedown despite Leaf's immediate intervention. Leaf also noted, and Funko's statement omitted, that Funko's team contacted his mother.
