Guerrilla Games Aims Big for Horizon Multiplayer

by Jonathan Mar 28,2025

Summary

  • Guerrilla Games may be anticipating significant player interest in its upcoming Horizon multiplayer game.
  • A recent Guerrilla job listing suggests the studio is developing live-service systems capable of supporting over one million players for the Horizon multiplayer game.
  • Guerrilla might be taking proactive steps to prevent server issues at launch, similar to those experienced by Helldivers 2.

A new job listing from Guerrilla Games hints at the studio's high expectations for its upcoming Horizon multiplayer project. Although the game has yet to be officially revealed, Guerrilla seems to anticipate a massive player base for this live-service title.

Since the release of Horizon Forbidden West in 2022 and its Burning Shores DLC the following year, Guerrilla has been relatively quiet, focusing on smaller projects like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, evidence dating back to 2018 suggests that Guerrilla has been diligently working on a Horizon multiplayer game. Recent job listings, particularly one from 2025, have all but confirmed its existence.

While the exact announcement date for Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer project remains uncertain, a recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer indicates ambitious plans for player numbers. The job listing requires "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems across multiple public cloud providers," suggesting that Guerrilla is preparing a robust live-service infrastructure capable of supporting over one million players.

Guerrilla Might Be Ensuring a Trouble-Free Launch for the Horizon Multiplayer Game

On the other hand, this preparation might be more about preventing potential issues at launch rather than sheer confidence in player numbers. For example, Helldivers 2 faced significant server issues due to its unexpectedly high popularity on PS5 and PC, which negatively impacted both new and existing players. Guerrilla may be taking these measures to ensure a smooth onboarding process for the Horizon multiplayer game, even if it doesn't achieve the same level of success as Helldivers 2.

Given that the Horizon multiplayer game has been in development for several years, and assuming there are no significant behind-the-scenes issues, Guerrilla might be preparing to unveil the live-service title this year. A few months ago, another Guerrilla job listing hinted at a new Horizon game release in 2025. With the third mainline Horizon entry still some time away, this could very well be the anticipated Horizon multiplayer project.
