NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement affects the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially launched in China in September 2021 to positive reception, the game's global release in June 2022 faced delays and less initial impact. Despite its Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and successful capture of the Hogwarts atmosphere, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened failed to maintain player interest.
The game's decline is attributed by players to several factors. Reddit discussions highlight a shift towards a pay-to-win model, with reworks to the reward system disadvantaging skilled, free-to-play players. Numerous nerfs and slower progression for non-spending players contributed to its waning popularity.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions (as of August 26th). However, players in unaffected territories can still experience the dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels offered by the game.
