Minecraft Movie Surpasses Super Mario Bros. with Record Video Game Film Debut

by Madison Apr 20,2025

The Minecraft Movie has shattered box office records, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the largest domestic debut for a video game adaptation. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, who also featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this Xbox game adaptation raked in an impressive $157 million in North America during its opening weekend. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which holds the record as the highest-grossing video game adaptation to date, opened with $146 million domestically back in April 2023.

Internationally, A Minecraft Movie added another $144 million, culminating in a global opening weekend total of $301 million. With a production budget of $150 million, not including marketing expenses, the film may already be in the black for Warner Bros.

Based on Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, A Minecraft Movie taps into the enduring popularity of the Microsoft-owned sandbox game. To further leverage the film's release, Minecraft has introduced movie tie-in DLC.

IGN's review of A Minecraft Movie gave it a 6/10, praising director Jared Hess for infusing the film with a unique and humorous comic perspective, particularly in the more subdued first half. On the other hand, Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White is facing potential disaster at the box office. With global earnings of $168.4 million ($77.5 million domestic and $90.9 million international) and a hefty $250 million production budget, a comeback akin to Mufasa: The Lion King seems unlikely.
