MultiVersus, the beloved free-to-play fighting game, will be shutting down following the conclusion of its upcoming 5th Season. Dive in to discover what Season 5 holds and what the future entails for MultiVersus.
On January 31, 2025, MultiVersus' official Twitter (X) account broke the news that the game will cease operations on May 30, 2025, after its fifth and final season. Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed in a detailed blog post that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Kicking off on February 4, 2025, and running through May 30, 2025, Season 5 will introduce two new characters to the roster: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. The developers have assured fans that "all new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 wraps up, MultiVersus will no longer be downloadable from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No specific reasons for the shutdown have been disclosed by the MultiVersus team.
Post-Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue enjoying the game "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this feature, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the player's PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, enabling offline play with all previously earned and purchased content.
As of January 31, 2025, real money transactions for Gleamium, MultiVersus' premium currency, have been discontinued. However, players can still utilize any remaining Gleamium to acquire in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus entered the gaming scene with its public beta in July 2022, captivating fans with its free-to-play model and unique 2v2 team-based format, reminiscent yet distinct from Super Smash Bros. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open beta phase delivered multiple updates and content across two seasons. The game saw a relaunch in May 2024, enriched with new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, new currencies, and more.
Despite these enhancements, the game struggled with ongoing technical issues, frequent disconnections, and dissatisfaction over its microtransactions. Reports from July 2024 highlighted a drastic 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5, signaling waning interest.
MultiVersus is set to officially close its doors on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a legacy of 35 playable characters spanning various iconic franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
Until its final day on May 30, 2025, MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
