The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge

The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles a Realmgate but presents a significantly greater challenge. Accessing it requires three Crisis Fragments, each obtained by conquering a Citadel – exceptionally rare and difficult map nodes.

Unlocking the Arbiter of Ash

The Burning Monolith is the gateway to the endgame pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. Attempting to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, comprising three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing these Citadels yields the three necessary Crisis Fragments. Combine them at the Monolith's altar to unlock the Arbiter of Ash encounter.

Prepare for a formidable foe. The Arbiter of Ash is the game's most powerful pinnacle boss, boasting devastating attacks and immense health. Ensure your character build is optimized before engaging.

The Citadel Hunt: A Test of Patience

Three Citadels – Iron, Copper, and Stone – each guarded by a unique boss, hold the coveted Crisis Fragments. Locating them is the primary challenge.

Key Considerations:

  • Single Attempt: Citadels can only be attempted once.
  • Random Generation: Their location on the randomly generated Atlas is unpredictable.

Strategies (unproven, based on player experience):

  1. Directional Progression: Choose a direction on the Atlas and systematically explore until a Citadel is found. Utilizing Towers for a broader view is recommended.
  2. Corruption Focus: Look for corrupted nodes at the Atlas's edges. Clear these nodes, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat. This can be combined with the directional approach.
  3. Clustered Appearance: Anecdotal evidence suggests Citadels may appear in clusters. Finding one increases the likelihood of finding others nearby.

Citadel hunting is a late-game endeavor, best undertaken with a fully optimized build and significant boss-fighting experience.

Alternative Acquisition:

While hunting Citadels is the traditional method, Crisis Fragments can be purchased on trading websites or through the Currency Exchange. Their rarity often commands a high price, offering a time-saving alternative for players.
