Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalpers, Shortages, and Outages Again

by Andrew Apr 21,2025

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to hit the shelves starting May 30, 2025. This set has sparked significant interest among collectors, partly due to the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a nostalgic nod to classics like Brock's Sandslash and Rocket's Mewtwo. For those who've been around since the early days, this is a thrilling development. Moreover, the set's focus on Team Rocket, a beloved villainous faction from the first generation, adds to its allure. Much like the popular Prismatic Evolutions set earlier this year, Destined Rivals promises to be a fan-favorite.

However, the excitement surrounding the set's launch has been overshadowed by the usual chaos. When pre-orders opened, fans encountered numerous difficulties accessing the Pokémon Center website to secure an Elite Trainer Box (ETB), a popular choice for those eager to delve into the new set. The situation was exacerbated by scalpers who quickly listed these pre-orders on platforms like eBay at inflated prices, with some listings reaching several hundred dollars for a box that typically retails for $54.99. Joe Merrick of Serebii expressed his frustration with the situation, highlighting the shift towards treating Pokémon TCG as a financial investment rather than a hobby.

This scenario is unfortunately familiar. Sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 have faced similar issues with shortages and rapid sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged these challenges and has promised additional inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB later in the year, according to a FAQ on PokéBeach. Yet, despite these efforts, some buyers have reported their ETB orders being cancelled, further fueling the frustration within the community.

The high demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are undeniable, but the rampant scalping and stock issues are tarnishing the experience for many who simply want to enjoy the game. While digital alternatives like Pokémon TCG Pocket offer a solution to physical scarcity, the desire for tangible cards remains strong. A visit to your local store's card aisle is likely to reveal the struggle of securing packs. As fans eagerly await exciting releases like Destined Rivals, it's hoped that solutions will emerge to address these ongoing challenges and restore the joy of collecting and playing.
