Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The director, fresh off the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, is indeed still working on this highly anticipated project. And there's a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep the excitement alive.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
The details surrounding this movie remain largely shrouded in mystery. However, we do know it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has provided some clarity on its timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same interview with Deadline in February, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's film will follow 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she said. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
Tropper’s words offer hope that progress is being made on Levy's project, even though fans will have to wait until at least late 2026, if not 2027, to see it.
Since the release of the critically divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars film releases. Several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars films, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
But that's not all Disney has planned for the Star Wars franchise. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
