Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year

by Elijah Mar 28,2025

Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using the engine from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is set to launch in 2025. The dedicated team of volunteer developers reaffirmed this target during a recent developer update stream, where they showcased the impressive progress they've made on this AAA-scale modding project. Years of passion and hard work have gone into Skyblivion, and the team is optimistic about meeting their deadline, expressing hopes of possibly even surpassing their own expectations with the community's support.

Simply calling Skyblivion a one-to-one remake might not do justice to the extensive enhancements being made. The developers are not just recreating the game; they're revamping numerous aspects of the original Elder Scrolls title. From ensuring that unique items truly stand out to enhancing the challenge posed by existing bosses like Mannimarco, the team is committed to elevating the gameplay experience. Their livestream highlighted the revamped "A Brush with Death" quest, showcasing the beautifully reimagined painted world.

Adding an intriguing layer to this project is the long-rumored official remake of Oblivion. Earlier this year, details about potential changes to combat and other features in an Oblivion remake surfaced, though Microsoft chose not to comment when approached by IGN. Moreover, in 2023, an Oblivion remaster was inadvertently mentioned in documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial. While some projects listed, like an Indiana Jones game, have since been released, others such as the Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters remain unconfirmed.

The potential launch of an official Oblivion remake by Microsoft and Bethesda could impact fan projects like Skyblivion. Bethesda has historically supported modding communities across its titles, from the classics to the more recent Starfield. However, there's always a risk that such extensive fan mods could face challenges, as seen with the delays experienced by Fallout London. The Skyblivion team will be hoping for smooth sailing as they approach their 2025 release.
