Sony reportedly plans a return to the handheld gaming console market, potentially challenging Nintendo's Switch. Bloomberg reports suggest an early-stage development project, though Sony may ultimately decide against releasing the console.
Long-time gaming enthusiasts will recall Sony's PlayStation Portable and Vita. The Vita's popularity notwithstanding, Sony, along with other companies, seemingly deemed competing with smartphones futile. The rise of mobile gaming, coupled with the gradual withdrawal of many competitors, left Nintendo largely unchallenged.
However, the recent resurgence of dedicated handheld consoles like the Steam Deck and the continued success of the Nintendo Switch, alongside advancements in mobile device technology, may have shifted the landscape. This improved mobile gaming technology could convince Sony that a dedicated handheld console market exists, offering a profitable niche for a high-quality product.
This news, however, is still tentative and in the very early stages of development. For now, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 for some excellent titles to play on your smartphone.
