Splitgate 2: The "Halo Meets Portal" Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, have unveiled their highly anticipated sequel: Splitgate 2. Launching in 2025, this new installment promises a fresh take on the original's fast-paced, portal-based gameplay while retaining the core elements that made the first game a success.
Revealed via a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 aims to redefine the arena shooter experience. CEO Ian Proulx stated the ambition to create "a game that can last a decade or more," necessitating a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop than its predecessor. This commitment to longevity informed the design philosophy, as Head of Marketing Hilary Goldstein explained: the portal mechanics have been re-evaluated to provide both strategic depth and accessibility.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 will introduce a faction system, adding a new layer of strategic depth. While familiar elements persist, the developers assure players that the sequel will offer a completely revitalized experience. The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
The original Splitgate, often described as a fusion of Halo and Portal, quickly gained popularity after its demo release, attracting 600,000 downloads within a month. This success led to server upgrades to handle the immense player base. After an extended early access period, the original Splitgate officially launched in September 2022, with the developers subsequently announcing a pause on updates to focus on a more ambitious sequel.
Splitgate 2's trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and its three unique factions: Aeros (focused on speed), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While details remain scarce, the developers confirmed that it won't be a hero shooter like Overwatch or Valorant.
Further gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), but the trailer itself offers a tantalizing glimpse of what awaits players, including new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to delve deeper into the game's lore through comics, earn character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
