Nintendo's announcement ending regular updates for Splatoon 3 has reignited speculation about a potential Splatoon 4. While the game isn't entirely abandoned – holiday events and balance patches will continue – the end of regular content updates marks a significant shift.
Nintendo's recent announcement confirmed the conclusion of regular content updates for Splatoon 3. However, festive events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will continue, along with ongoing monthly challenges and necessary weapon adjustments.
"After two fantastic years of Splatoon 3, regular updates are ending," the official Twitter (X) announcement stated. "But don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will return! Weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will also continue."
This news follows the September 16th conclusion of Splatoon 3's Grand Festival, celebrated with a commemorative video showcasing past Splatfests and the Deep Cut trio. Nintendo's farewell message, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!", fueled anticipation for what's next. With two years having passed since Splatoon 3's September 9th launch, and development winding down, rumors of a sequel, Splatoon 4, are intensifying. Some players even believe they've spotted potential clues – or easter eggs – within the Grand Festival event hinting at a new game setting.
Responding to images of a city-like location shared with Nintendo's announcement, one fan commented, "Doesn't look like Inkopolis. Could this be Splatoon 4's setting?" However, other fans remain unconvinced, suggesting the location is simply a variation of Splatsville.
Although unconfirmed, reports suggest Nintendo has begun development on a new Splatoon title for the Switch. The Grand Festival's status as Splatoon 3's final major Splatfest further strengthens the belief that Splatoon 4 is imminent. Past Final Fests have influenced subsequent sequels, leading to speculation about a "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4. For now, however, official confirmation from Nintendo remains awaited.
