Kelly Sue DeConnick has been a trailblazer in the traditionally male-dominated world of comics. At Marvel, she revitalized the character of Captain Marvel, bringing Carol Danvers to the forefront—a legacy that carried over into the MCU, with DeConnick credited as a consultant. Beyond the major publishers, she's a prominent voice in indie comics with works like Pretty Deadly, which offers a mystical western flair, and Bitch Planet, a sci-fi dystopian feminist narrative. Her ongoing project, FML, from Dark Horse Comics, delves into supernatural themes. If you haven't yet experienced her writing, you're missing out on a remarkable talent and a truly inspiring individual. –Chelsea Reed

Sarah Rose Etter's unique yet clear-eyed novels resonate deeply with those who appreciate the unconventional. With only two novels published to date, both have been among my top reads of their release years. The Book of X explores the life of a woman born into a family of generational meat farmers, her stomach knotted in a surreal twist that is both painful and relatable. Ripe delves into the surreal experiences of a young woman at a disturbingly psychotic San Francisco startup, haunted by an ever-present void, echoing themes reminiscent of Rose Glass’s film Saint Maud. I eagerly anticipate many more of her captivating works in my lifetime. –Leanne Butkovic
Notable works: Ripe, The Book of X

I'm thrilled about the upcoming film adaptation of this feminist medieval tale and can't wait to see Charli XCX portray Rosa! –Kelly Pham

It's likely you've heard of N.K. Jemisin's The Broken Earth Trilogy, and for good reason. While her other fantasy novels are equally worthy of attention, the captivating storytelling, rich characters, and innovative magic system in The Broken Earth Trilogy, particularly in The Obelisk Gate, make it a standout. The Fifth Season may initially challenge with its playful narrative structure, but the payoff is well worth it. The trilogy follows Essun, a woman on a quest to find her husband, who killed their son and kidnapped their daughter, all while surviving a recurring cataclysmic event and hiding her earth-manipulating powers. It's an extraordinary, Hugo Award-winning journey. –Miranda Sanchez

T. Kingfisher's prolific output is astonishing, and my adventure-loving heart relishes her fresh takes on classic fairy tales and horror stories. Her works often delve into gothic horror and dark fantasy, yet her comedic timing and well-crafted characters offer a balanced counterpoint to the heavier themes. Whether it's the slow-burning exploration of emotional abuse in "What Moves the Dead" or the poignant Saint of Steel fantasy romance series tackling personal identity and loss, Kingfisher's stories leave a lasting impact. –MS
Notable works: Nettle & Bone, What Moves the Dead, Paladin's Grace

It might seem obvious to recommend the recent Nobel Prize winner for Literature, but the acclaim surrounding Han Kang is justified once you delve into her work. Introduced to her through The Vegetarian upon its English translation in 2015, I was captivated by its haunting narrative of a housewife who stops eating meat, eventually abandoning food altogether. Released in South Korea eight years earlier, it's even more striking. Since then, I've followed her works from the similarly themed Greek Lessons to the harrowing depiction of South Korean political atrocities in Human Acts and We Do Not Part. Han Kang is a genius and an absolute powerhouse. –LB

Emerging as a promising sci-fi writer, Yume Kitasei's rapid rise to releasing her third novel is impressive. Her standalone stories quickly construct rich worlds and move at an exhilarating pace. Her debut, The Deep Sky, is a gripping murder mystery set on a tech-filled spaceship bound for humanity's new home. Her follow-up, The Stardust Grail, is an Indiana Jones-style adventure where the protagonist races against time to find an ancient alien artifact crucial to her friend's survival but potentially catastrophic for humanity. Both are imaginative and engaging, and I eagerly await her next novel this fall. –MS

Silvia Moreno-Garcia fearlessly explores various genres, from historical romance with a touch of fantasy in The Beautiful Ones to dark vampire adventures in Certain Dark Things, consistently delivering captivating stories. Erin Morgenstern's novels, The Night Circus and The Starless Sea, envelop readers in dreamlike experiences. Among the few authors whose books I purchase in hardcover instantly, Morgenstern's works are treasures I collect in various editions. The Night Circus is a sumptuous historical fantasy romance about two magicians destined to duel at a mysterious circus, a book that always pulls me out of a reading slump. Her second novel, The Starless Sea, is an enchanting tale about the power of stories, beginning in our world before venturing into an underground realm that houses all narratives. Both novels are best enjoyed with a warm cup of tea. –MS

The announcement of a new Helen Oyeyemi book always fills me with excitement. Her unique voice defies easy categorization—think of it as chasing a whimsical ghost that toys with you, yet leaves you exhilarated. Her novels, often inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's folktales, venture into fantastical realms that break the conventions of literary fiction. Gingerbread, for example, offers a modern twist on Hansel and Gretel through a capitalist lens. As Alexandra Kleeman noted to The Nation, Oyeyemi's work has "the discombobulating quality of walking through a moving vehicle while carrying a full-to-the-brim cup of very hot tea." –LB
