Hyper Light Breaker offers players a diverse range of characters to explore, each with distinct playstyles to combat the menacing Abyss King. Unlocking new characters is straightforward compared to other roguelikes, but the game doesn't explicitly guide players on how to do so. This guide covers the characters available in the early access version of Hyper Light Breaker, which currently features two unlockable characters. We will update this guide as more characters become available.
To unlock new characters, players must collect Abyss Stones, which are dropped exclusively by defeating Crowns (bosses). Before facing these bosses, you'll need to acquire Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. You can locate Prisms on the map by following the golden diamond icon.
After defeating a boss, return to the teleporter at the Cursed Outpost and choose the Breaker you wish to unlock. Use your Abyss Stones to unlock the selected character, making them available for play. While there are nine characters in total, only two are currently unlockable in the early access version. The method for unlocking the remaining characters is yet to be revealed.
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker starts with a SyCom, a crucial item that sets their base stats and core perk, defining their unique playstyle. Here's a detailed look at each character and their playstyles.
Vermillion is the initial character players encounter, equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom, which enhances his ranged combat capabilities. His Rail shots have a chance to crit, and if they do, the next shot is guaranteed to crit as well.
For those who prefer melee combat, Vermillion can unlock the Tank SyCom, which boosts armor upon perfect parries and offers better defensive and melee stats than Gunslinger, making it a safer choice overall.
Lapis starts with the Lightweaver SyCom, which increases the damage of her Rail shots after picking up a Battery (ammo). Her unique trait is the Warrior SyCom, which enhances her core stats with each upgrade she receives.
Lapis excels with both SyComs, but the Warrior SyCom makes her exceptionally powerful over time. With enough upgrades, she can surpass other Breakers in terms of raw stats, turning her into a formidable force.
Goro is designed for ranged combat, starting with the Astrologer SyCom, which speeds up the charging of his Blade skills while shooting. His unlockable Sniper SyCom increases his critical hit rate, making him a high-risk, high-reward character.
Goro fits the archetype of a ranged glass cannon, boasting higher damage potential than Vermillion and Lapis but lacking in defensive capabilities. Mastering Goro requires skill, but when played effectively, he can be a devastating force on the battlefield.
