BioWare comes with both good and bad news for Dragon Age The Veilguard players: you won't have to deal with pesky issues arising from DRM, but PC players won't get to preload the game.
Veilguard Fans Rejoice No DRM DecisionBut No Preload for PC Players
"Veilguard will not have Denuvo on PC. We trust you," Dragon Age: The Veilguard project director Michael Gamble
shared today on Twitter (X). For context, digital rights management (DRM), such as Denuvo, serves as an anti-piracy software that's quite popular with major game pubilshers like EA, though these softwares are not as popular with players especially those on PC as they tend to render the game unplayable in some capacity. As DRM has often been linked to performance issues in games, players have rejoiced at BioWare's decision. "I support this. I will buy your game upon launch. Thank you," one user said in reply to Michael Gamble.
Veilguard also reiterates its promise that, yes, you won't be forced to always be online just to play the game, as shared by Gamble in a reply to another user. However, the no-DRM-win comes with a cost, as BioWare confirmed that the "lack of DRM means that there will be no preload period for PC players." Quite a bit of a disappointment to some players, as Veilguard requires at least 100GB of storage space. However, console players can rest easy as they won't be affected and can still preload Veilguard. Xbox players who have early access can install the game now, meanwhile those on the PlayStation with early access will have to wait on October 29.
Alongside the confirmation of Veilguard not using Denuvo, BioWare released the system necessities today. "Players with high-end rigs will be able to take advantage of our suite of Ray Tracing features and uncapped frame rates. For the minimum PC specs, we focused on making the game as accessible to as many people as possible," BioWare said. "For consoles (Playstation 5 & Xbox Series X|S), there will be fidelity and performance modes, targeting 30 and 60 FPS respectively." To have all the Ray Tracings effects enabled on PC, your rig requires either Intel Core i9 9900K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X with 16GB of RAM, as well as Nvidia RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon 6800XT graphics cards.
