This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is substantial, measuring 21 inches high and 16 inches wide—roughly 60% the size of the original painting. Its impressive scale positions it as a serious piece of art, not just a LEGO build, reflecting LEGO's growing appeal as an adult hobby. This isn't a toy to be tucked away; it's designed to be displayed.

Vincent van Gogh's iconic Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, holds deep emotional significance for the artist. He saw the sunflower as a symbol of gratitude, writing to a friend: "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
He painted four versions in August 1888, revisiting the motif in January 1889 with further repetitions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original (F454) resides at London's National Gallery; one repetition (F457) is at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo; and the most iconic, (F458) at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, inspired this LEGO set.
The LEGO Van Gogh Museum collaboration faithfully recreates F458 as a three-dimensional relief, using abstract pieces to capture van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes. The 2,615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags, an instruction booklet, and a QR code linking to a podcast exploring van Gogh's life and inspirations.
The build itself is cleverly structured. You first construct the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly realistic process that enhances the finished piece's sense of value. A delightful detail mirrors van Gogh's addition of a wooden strip to the top of the original canvas to accommodate the sunflowers. LEGO cleverly replicates this 'imperfection' using brown bricks, a subtle nod to the artist's process that only the builder truly appreciates.
Building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, reflecting the dedication of the original artist. However, the final result is stunning, particularly the wilting flowers and those depicted in profile. The seemingly random elements gain context when viewed from a distance, revealing the careful detail in each stem and leaf. This isn't a race; take your time and enjoy the process.
The completed set's destination is clear: your wall. This is a piece to be admired and enjoyed long after the build is complete. A week after finishing it, I still find new details to appreciate. This is a truly exceptional LEGO set, highly recommended for its quality, design, and lasting appeal.
