Hazelight's Josef Fares Says Single-Player Game is Possible in the Future

by Patrick Mar 15,2025

Josef Fares, the creative force behind Hazelight Studios and the acclaimed cooperative adventure Split Fiction, recently addressed fan inquiries and criticisms surrounding his work. A fan wrongly accused him of proclaiming the death of single-player games, a claim Fares vehemently denied. He pointed to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (2013), a purely single-player experience and one of Hazelight's most successful titles, as evidence to the contrary.

Fares clarified that while Hazelight is renowned for its cooperative games, developing a single-player title remains a possibility. "We’re not excluding it," he stated, emphasizing the studio's willingness to explore diverse gameplay styles.

He also addressed criticism regarding Split Fiction's two female protagonists. While some questioned the choice's implications, Fares highlighted Hazelight's history of diverse character pairings: two brothers in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, two men in A Way Out, and a male-female duo in It Takes Two. He explained that the decision to feature two women in Split Fiction stemmed from his inspiration in his daughters, prioritizing strong storytelling and well-developed characters over superficial characteristics. "I don’t care what’s between someone’s legs—it’s about crafting great characters," Fares stated.

Released on March 6th, Split Fiction has garnered widespread critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay and diverse scenarios. System requirements were released beforehand, ensuring players were well-prepared to experience Hazelight's latest creation.
