by Joseph Apr 05,2025

Curt Pires, known for his compelling narratives in Comixology Originals titles like *Youth* and *Lost Falls*, is set to captivate audiences once again with his return to Image Comics. This time, Pires introduces *Lost Fantasy*, a new series that draws significant inspiration from the beloved JRPG genre, particularly the iconic *Final Fantasy VII*. This blend of Eastern and Western storytelling promises to be a thrilling addition to Pires' portfolio.

*Lost Fantasy* sees Pires collaborating once again with artist Luca Casalanguida, previously known for their work on *Money*. The debut issue boasts cover art by Casalanguida, Alex Diotto, Darick Robertson, and Jae Lee. Additionally, the series will feature a serialized backup story titled *Indigo Children: Exodus*, continuing the narrative from Pires' sci-fi series *Indigo Children*.

According to Image Comics, *Lost Fantasy* unfolds in a world where a magical realm exists parallel to ours. Over a century ago, a natural disaster led to the first contact between the two worlds, causing a rift through which monsters emerged. Ever since, a secretive group known as The Great Hunters has been working alongside global leaders to safeguard our world. However, a recent mysterious mass killing in Montana has shifted dynamics in both realms, leaving it to rookie monster hunter Henry Blackheart to restore order.

"I'm ecstatic to be back at Image Comics with *Lost Fantasy*—a series that merges my love of Western comics like *East Of West* and *Something Is Killing The Children* with the dense world-building and action of the JRPGs I grew up playing," Pires shares with IGN. "Games like the *Final Fantasy* series—with our lead character's Snow White spikey hair and Giant Sword being a direct homage to Tetsuya Nomura's amazing character design for Cloud."

Pires also notes, "The 'Lost' in the title is also a homage—albeit a more subtle one—to the great Hironobu Sakaguchi's *Lost Odyssey*—which is his criminally underrated post-*Final Fantasy* masterpiece at Mistwalker. So the comic has a lot of JRPG love at its core."

Play*Lost Fantasy #1* is slated for release on April 30, 2025.
