Marvel Rivals developers address datamining rumors: No intentional trolling, just a lot of ideas.

Dataminers have been uncovering a treasure trove of potential future characters in the code of Marvel Rivals, sparking debate about the authenticity of the list. Some believe the developers are intentionally misleading them, while others remain optimistic.

We directly asked Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu and Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo about these suspicions. While denying any deliberate trolling, they acknowledged the presence of numerous character concepts in the game's code. Wu explained that the development process involves numerous concepts, trials, and prototypes, leaving remnants in the code that may or may not represent future plans. The ultimate decision hinges on player expectations and maintaining a balanced and engaging gameplay experience.

Koo likened the situation to finding a discarded notebook filled with brainstorming notes, emphasizing the team's extensive experimentation with various play styles and heroes. He stated unequivocally that the team prioritizes game development over elaborate pranks.

The character selection process, they explained, involves a year-long planning horizon. NetEase identifies characters needed to balance the roster and add variety, proposing several options to Marvel Games. Community interest and upcoming Marvel projects (films, comics) also influence the final decision. This explains the extensive list of characters found in the code – a reflection of NetEase's ongoing ideation process.

Marvel Rivals continues to impress, with the Human Torch and The Thing slated to join the roster on February 21st. The ongoing success of the game, fueled by the regular addition of new characters every six weeks, highlights the developers' commitment to delivering a dynamic and engaging experience.
