Despite the risk of account bans, players of *Marvel Rivals* continue to engage with mods, even after a stringent crackdown coinciding with the launch of Season 1. Since the game's triumphant debut in December, players have been customizing their experience with mods, creating unique skins that transform characters like Iron Man into Vegeta from *Dragon Ball*, Mantis into a goth persona, and Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from *Chainsaw Man*.
Last week, with the introduction of the Fantastic Four and Season 1, *Marvel Rivals* implemented a covert mod restriction through asset hash checking. Developer NetEase, in a statement to IGN, emphasized that the game's terms and conditions explicitly prohibit the use of mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. They had previously cautioned players about the potential consequences of modding, reiterating: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned."
Despite these warnings, a workaround has surfaced and is gaining traction online. While it requires more steps than before, it remains accessible to most PC users. Modder Prafit, who shared their workaround on Nexus Mods, warned users: "Use at your own risk." They explained that this workaround bypasses a system designed to prevent modding following the Season 1 patch. "No-one knows if NetEase will ban you, but they have never issued permabans as far as we know," Prafit added.
The modding community has quickly adapted, introducing new mods that capitalize on the addition of Fantastic Four characters. For instance, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from *One Piece*. According to Nexus Mods statistics, this Luffy mod has already seen over 5,000 downloads within just two days of its release.

The ongoing use of mods raises the question of whether NetEase will follow through with its threats of bans. While no confirmed cases of bans for modding have surfaced, the existence of workarounds might provoke further action from the developers. NetEase's potential reasons for banning mods include lost revenue from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the impact mods could have on gameplay balance and game performance. Modder Prafit noted that their workaround is best suited for users with high-performance PCs.
In the meantime, players can review the Season 1 patch notes for *Marvel Rivals*, explore official statistics on pick and win rates in Quickplay and Competitive modes from Season 0, and stay updated with the latest Marvel Rivals codes for free skins.
