"Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Unveiled: Super Smash Bros. Creator Sparks Fan Frenzy with New Game Reveal"

by David Apr 04,2025

The excitement around the Nintendo Switch 2 is reaching new heights, especially after Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind Super Smash Bros., re-posted the announcement for the upcoming Nintendo Direct with a simple yet thrilling "Ooh!" This has sparked a frenzy among fans, who are now buzzing with speculation about a potential new entry in the iconic fighting game series.

As reported by Automaton, Sakurai shared the Japanese version of Nintendo's announcement that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be fully unveiled on April 2. While his "Ooh!" might just reflect his personal excitement, the Super Smash Bros. community is hopeful that it hints at a new game for the next-generation console.

Although the post itself doesn't confirm anything, there have been several subtle hints and teases that suggest Sakurai might be preparing for another Super Smash Bros. reveal. In 2022, he launched his own YouTube channel, which he later wound down after assuring fans that he wasn't finished with game development. His final video on the channel hinted at a new project that could be unveiled "sooner or later."

Despite these teases, no official announcement has been made about a new Super Smash Bros. game. Sakurai himself has previously expressed uncertainty about how the series could surpass the monumental success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch, which boasts an expansive roster including characters like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona 5, and Steve and Alex from Minecraft, among others.

However, the likelihood of a new Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems high, especially considering the phenomenal sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has sold over 35.88 million copies. It's also worth noting that Nintendo has consistently released a new Super Smash Bros. game with each of its consoles since the original debuted on the N64 in 1999.
