Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 Are Still Selling Very Well

Summary

  • Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to achieve remarkable sales figures years after their initial releases.
  • In December 2024, GTA V secured the third position as the best-selling PS5 game in both the US/Canada and Europe.
  • During the same month, Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed the top spot as the best-selling PS4 game in the United States and second place in Europe.

Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V, despite their years on the market, consistently demonstrate exceptional sales performance. Rockstar's mastery of open-world game design, evident in both the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises, has solidified their reputation for quality and contributed to the enduring popularity of these titles.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V thrust players into the roles of three aspiring criminals navigating the sprawling, chaotic city of Los Santos. Its initial success was amplified by subsequent re-releases across various platforms and the immensely popular online multiplayer component, GTA Online. This has cemented GTA V's place as one of the best-selling entertainment products in history. Red Dead Redemption 2, launched in 2018, transported players to the untamed American Old West, allowing them to experience the story through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan. This title also garnered critical acclaim and significant commercial success.

Remarkably, nearly twelve years after GTA V's debut and seven years after Red Dead Redemption 2's release, both games continue to sell exceptionally well. PlayStation's December 2024 download charts reveal GTA V's position as the third best-selling PS5 title in the US/Canada and Europe, and fifth place for PS4 in both regions. Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved the highest PS4 sales in the United States and ranked second in Europe, surpassed only by EA Sports FC 25.

GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 Remain at the Top of PlayStation Sales Charts

According to the European 2024 GSD figures (reported by VGC), Grand Theft Auto V secured fourth place as the best-selling game of the year, climbing from fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw a rise, moving up to seventh place from its eighth-place position in 2023. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million copies sold.

The sustained success of these established titles underscores the enduring appeal of Rockstar's games. Fans eagerly anticipate the future of both franchises. The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is reportedly slated for release later this year, while rumors suggest a potential port of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
