Travis Willingham: Critical Role Video Game Announcement Imminent

by Dylan Mar 29,2025

The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game. CEO Travis Willingham recently hinted to Business Insider that an announcement could come "any day." Although details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured that the development team is diligently working on it.

Willingham, who is both an actor and a star of Critical Role, expressed excitement about the upcoming project. "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he said, emphasizing the interactive nature of the game.

Critical Role was co-founded by Willingham alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. The show has evolved into a vast universe, with one of its most successful ventures being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects but may not directly connect with them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating this video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role world.

Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on their approach to the project, telling Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been set, fans can stay engaged by exploring the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
