The BAFTA Games Awards concluded last night, spotlighting some of the industry's most notable achievements. Among the top winners were Balatro and Vampire Survivors, both of which have made significant impacts in the gaming world, especially in the mobile sector. However, the absence of platform-specific categories raises questions about the visibility of mobile games at such prestigious events.
While the BAFTA Games Awards might not have the same widespread audience as Geoff Keighley's Game Awards, they are often regarded as more prestigious. The 2024 awards did not feature specific mobile categories, yet we saw remarkable wins from major mobile releases over the past year.
Balatro, a captivating roguelike deckbuilder by Localthunk, clinched the Debut Game award. This victory has sparked both excitement and concern within the industry, as publishers are now scouring for the next indie sensation that might replicate Balatro's success.
Vampire Survivors, which was named Best Game in 2023, continued its winning streak by taking home the Best Evolving Game award. This is a significant accomplishment, especially given the competition from heavyweights like Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV Online.
The BAFTA Games Awards adopt a unique approach by not featuring platform-specific awards. This decision was made in 2019, leading to the removal of the mobile-specific category. Despite this, major mobile and multiplatform titles like Vampire Survivors and Genshin Impact have continued to win accolades.
In a previous discussion, Luke Hebblethwaite from the BAFTAs game team explained that the organization believes games should be judged on their merits, regardless of the platform on which they are released. This philosophy aims to ensure that all games stand toe-to-toe in competition.
Both Balatro and Vampire Survivors have undoubtedly benefited from their availability on mobile platforms, reaching a broader audience. This reach could be seen as a form of recognition, even without dedicated mobile categories.
That's my take on the situation. If you're interested in diving deeper into mobile gaming discussions, don't miss the latest episode of the Pocket Gamer Podcast, where Will and I explore the latest trends and insights in the world of mobile gaming and beyond.
