by Caleb Apr 02,2025

Summary

  • Genki showcased a mockup of the Switch 2 at CES.
  • CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed details like magnetic Joy-Con and an optical sensor.
  • The upcoming Switch 2 is still slim enough to fit current dock, but isn't compatible with it.

The excitement surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 has reached new heights following a recent revelation at CES 2025. Genki, a leading tech company known for its innovative handheld gaming gadgets such as the popular PocketPro game controller, brought a 3D-printed mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2 to the event. This mockup provided a tangible glimpse into the future of Nintendo's gaming console.

During private sessions at CES, Genki allowed attendees to closely examine the Switch 2 mockup, which they claimed was based on a unit acquired on the black market. The replica boasts accurate dimensions and showcased several new features, including an increased size reminiscent of Valve’s Steam Deck, seemingly magnetic Joy-Con, a second USB-C port, and an intriguing new button labeled "C."

In an insightful interview with The Verge, Genki's CEO, Eddie Tsai, shed light on some of the new features. He confirmed that the Joy-Con on the Switch 2 are indeed magnetic, particularly the SL and SR buttons. A large button on each Joy-Con allows for easy detachment by pushing out a pin that breaks the magnetic connection with the console chassis. Despite the shift from the current-gen Switch's sliding rails to magnets, Tsai assured that the Joy-Con remain securely attached during gameplay.

Genki Shares Additional Details About the Switch 2

Eddie Tsai provided further insights into the Switch 2's design. Each Joy-Con's "mounting channel" features an optical sensor, hinting at new functionalities such as using the Joy-Con as a mouse when connected with an appropriate attachment, possibly via the magnetic SL and SR buttons. Recent leaks of Switch 2 images online seem to corroborate this feature, with many observers noting the presence of optical sensors on the new Joy-Con.

Despite its larger dimensions, the Switch 2 remains slim enough to fit into the current Nintendo Switch dock. However, Tsai pointed out that indentations on the Switch 2 prevent it from being compatible with the original dock. As for the mysterious "C" button and the additional USB-C port, Genki has yet to uncover their specific purposes.
