Pokémon TCG Pocket Devs Looking to Improve Trading Following Major Player Backlash

by George Apr 11,2025

The developer behind Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, Creatures Inc., is currently "actively investigating ways to improve" the trading feature that was rolled out last week amidst significant player backlash. In a recent statement shared on X/Twitter, the company expressed gratitude for player feedback and acknowledged that while the controversial trading system was designed to curb abuse, it has inadvertently hindered casual enjoyment for many players.

Creatures Inc. had promised to address player complaints by introducing required items as rewards in upcoming events. However, the latest Cresselia ex Drop Event, which launched on February 3, did not include any such rewards, leaving players disappointed. The trading system in Pokémon TCG Pocket already limits players from opening packs, using Wonder Picking, or trading excessively without spending real money. Additionally, the introduction of Trade Tokens, which require players to delete five cards of the same rarity from their collection to trade one, has been a major point of contention due to its high cost.

In their statement, Creatures Inc. explained that the trading feature's restrictions were intended to prevent bot abuse and maintain a fair and enjoyable environment for all players. They emphasized the importance of preserving the core fun of collecting cards within Pokémon TCG Pocket. Despite these intentions, the feedback received has made it clear that the current system is preventing casual enjoyment. Creatures Inc. is now looking into ways to improve the feature and plans to offer multiple methods to obtain Trade Tokens, including through event distributions.

However, the statement remains vague, lacking specific details about the upcoming changes or their timelines. This leaves players uncertain about whether their current trades will be refunded or compensated if the Trade Token costs are adjusted. Moreover, Creatures Inc.'s commitment to integrating Trade Tokens into events appears weak, as only 200 were offered as premium rewards in the Battle Pass update on February 1, which is barely enough for one trade of the lowest rarity requiring tokens.

The absence of Trade Tokens in the Cresselia ex Drop Event, despite promises made just the day before, has further frustrated the community. Players can earn new promo cards, Pack Hourglasses, Shinedust, shop tickets, and experience from the event, but no Trade Tokens were included.

Many fans believe that the trading system is designed to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly earned $200 million in its first month before trading was introduced. The inability to trade cards of 2 Star rarity or higher is seen as a strategy to encourage spending on packs for a chance to obtain rare cards. For instance, one player spent approximately $1,500 to complete the first set, and the third set was released just days ago.

The trading mechanic has been described by players as "predatory and downright greedy," "hilariously toxic," and a "monumental failure," highlighting the strong dissatisfaction within the community.
