Get ready for a brand-new Pokémon battle experience! Pokémon Champions, a competitive PvP game, was unveiled during February 2025's Pokémon Presents. Developed by The Pokémon Works with Game Freak's support, this game is launching on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, bringing cross-platform battles to a wider audience.
Here's everything we know so far, including potential release dates, trailer breakdowns, and gameplay details.
While an official release date is absent, we anticipate Pokémon Champions arriving sometime in 2026. The trailer only mentions it's "now in development," alongside Pokémon Legends Z-A (also shown, slated for late 2025). We believe The Pokémon Company will likely space these releases to maximize attention for each title. Releasing Champions later provides distance from Z-A, allowing for focused marketing and player engagement.

The reveal trailer, while light on gameplay, showcases the game's aesthetic. It begins with a nostalgic journey through Pokémon battling's history on Nintendo consoles, transitioning to a real-time battle between players—one on mobile, the other on Switch. The setting is a massive, futuristic arena, complete with cheering crowds and dazzling lights, creating an electrifying esports atmosphere. A highlight is a spectacular showdown featuring Charizard and Samurott against Dondozo and Aegislash, hinting at 1v1 or 2v2 formats. The visuals are significantly more dynamic than Scarlet & Violet.

Details are limited, but Pokémon Champions will focus solely on battles, omitting traditional catching and exploration. Integration with Pokémon Home lets you bring your favorite Pokémon from previous games. Cross-play between Switch and mobile suggests a broadly accessible, yet intensely competitive online experience. With Game Freak's involvement, Pokémon Champions aims to be a dedicated Pokémon esports title. Whether it caters to casual or hardcore players remains to be seen, but anticipation is high for the next trailer and, of course, the release date.
