Square Enix Transfers Octopath Traveler Operations to NetEase

by Noah Mar 29,2025

In a year marked by the closure and wind down of several recent game releases, fans of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent can breathe a sigh of relief. This mobile spin-off of the beloved throwback RPG will not be shutting down. However, starting in January next year, Square Enix is set to transfer the handling of operations to NetEase, signaling a possible retreat from the mobile gaming sector.

Earlier this week, we reported on the announcement of an official mobile version of another Square Enix title, Final Fantasy XIV. The feasibility of this port was largely due to the enthusiasm shown by Lightspeed Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent.

With Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent now set to be managed by NetEase, and the outsourcing of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, it's pertinent to consider Square Enix's current stance on mobile gaming. The transition to NetEase will include the transfer of save data and other progress, ensuring a smooth switchover for players.

The signs of Square Enix scaling back its mobile ambitions were evident as early as 2022, with the closure of Square Enix Montreal, the studio behind acclaimed titles like Hitman GO and Deus Ex GO. While it's reassuring to see that some games will continue despite this strategic shift, it's unfortunate that such changes are necessary, especially given the evident interest in Square Enix's mobile offerings, as demonstrated by the excitement around Final Fantasy XIV on mobile.
