Russian Checkers (8x8): Rules
Movement and Capture:
- White moves first.
- Pieces move only on dark squares.
- Mandatory captures: You must capture if a valid capture is available.
- Forward and backward captures are allowed.
- Kings can move and capture diagonally to any square.
- Turkish strike rule applies: Only one opponent piece can be captured per move.
- Multiple capture options? You can choose any, not necessarily the longest chain.
- Pawns become kings upon reaching the opponent's back rank and can immediately make king moves if possible.
Draw Conditions:
- Three (or more) kings vs. one king: If a player with this advantage doesn't capture the opponent's king within 15 moves (from when the force balance was established).
- King vs. King scenarios: No change in force balance (no captures, no new kings) for 30 moves (4-5 pieces) or 60 moves (6-7 pieces).
- Three pieces vs. one king: If a player with three pieces (any combination of kings and pawns) on the "high road" cannot capture the opponent's king within 5 moves.
- 15 consecutive king moves: If only kings are moved for 15 consecutive turns without pawn movement or captures.
- Three-fold repetition: If the same board position occurs three times with the same player to move.
International Checkers (10x10): Rules
Movement and Capture:
- White moves first.
- Pieces move only on dark squares.
- Mandatory captures: You must capture if a valid capture is available.
- Forward and backward captures are allowed.
- Kings can move and capture diagonally to any square.
- Turkish strike rule applies: Only one opponent piece can be captured per move.
- Majority rule applies: If multiple capture options exist, you must choose the one capturing the most pieces.
- Capturing pawns: A pawn that reaches the opponent's back rank during a capture continues the capture sequence as a pawn, not immediately becoming a king.
- Pawn promotion: A pawn that reaches the opponent's back rank by a regular move (or at the end of a capture sequence) becomes a king on its next turn.
